CallReply

The CallReply app on Android and iPhone

On Android, CallReply detects missed calls and sends the text on its own, from your number. On iPhone, iOS requires a different approach: the app prepares the reply and you confirm it. Both connect to the same web client area.

The Android APK is available on callreply.fr; Google Play and App Store releases are in preparation.

10:42 Missed call · Mrs Leroy 10:42 Text sent from your number

Hello, I'm on a job site. I'll call you back before 1 pm. Christophe, Martin Plumbing

Great, thanks. It's about the leak under the sink.

Example. The text is yours, change it whenever you like.

Android: full automatic reply

The app reads the call log and sends a text from your SIM as soon as a call is missed or declined. It works with the phone locked and catches up, on restart, any calls missed while it was off.

  • SMS sent from your own number
  • Missed calls, declined calls or both
  • French and English templates
  • One SMS per number per day, STOP list
  • Free manual reply from the history

Requirements: Android 8.0 or later · SIM card with an SMS plan · Battery optimisation exclusion on some brands

iPhone: a reply prepared for you to send

iOS does not let any app read the call log or send a text by itself. CallReply checks your rules and opens Messages with the text ready, in simple mode or in automatic mode with the Shortcuts app.

  • Simple mode: paste the number, Messages opens
  • Checks STOP list, cap and already-answered
  • Automatic mode with the Shortcuts app
  • Depends on your carrier's missed call alert
  • Same history and same web area

Requirements: iPhone with the Messages and Shortcuts apps · Automatic mode depends on the carrier · App Store release in preparation

The permissions requested, and why

On Android, CallReply asks for call log access to spot missed or declined calls, phone state to know when a call ends, and SMS sending to reply from your number. Notifications keep you posted about sends. Contacts access is optional: it is used to show names and fill in {first_name}. Each permission is explained in the app before it is requested.

Battery optimisation by brand

Some manufacturers, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Huawei, put background apps to sleep to save battery. On these phones you need to exclude CallReply from battery optimisation, otherwise texts may go out late or not at all. The setup guide inside the app shows which screens to open for your brand, step by step. It only takes a minute and needs doing once.

French and English

The app and the client area are available in French and English. You also get two SMS templates: one in French, one in English. That helps if some of your customers do not speak French, or if you work across several countries. The first name and name variables work the same way in both languages. Pick whichever fits each caller best.

The web client area

What you see on the phone is mirrored online: a dashboard with missed calls, SMS sent, delivered and failed, history you can filter by date, number and event type, contacts, templates and settings, devices and subscription. The My data section handles export or erasure, and support works through tickets. Data is hosted in France. It is handy for reviewing activity from a computer.

The permissions, one by one

The same explanations as in the app: what each permission is for, what CallReply never does, and what happens if you refuse it. In the app, each one also shows its status (Allowed · Refused · To change in the settings) and the button to set it.

Essential Without it, CallReply can't answer your missed calls properly.

Call log To see that a call was missed or declined, so you can answer it by SMS.
What it is for
To see that a call was missed or declined, so you can answer it by SMS.
What CallReply doesn't do
We never listen to or record a call: only the number, the time and the call type are read.
If you refuse
No missed call is detected: automatic and scheduled replies are stopped. History already sent stays readable.
Phone To react as soon as a call ends, and to pick the right SIM on a dual-SIM phone.

What CallReply doesn't do
We never place, block or record a call.
If you refuse

SMS To send the reply from your own number, with nobody in between.
What it is for
To send the reply from your own number, with nobody in between.
What CallReply doesn't do
We don't read your SMS, and only the replies you set up go out, within your daily cap.
If you refuse
No reply can leave your number: automatic and scheduled replies are stopped. Missed calls are still detected and counted.

Recommended CallReply works without it, but less well.

Replies may go out late or not at all, especially on Samsung.
Alarms & reminders To send scheduled replies at the exact time you chose.

Optional A nice extra: everything else works without it.

Contacts To show your customers' first names and write "Hello Marie" with {first_name}.

If you refuse
First names are not shown and {first_name} is replaced by a neutral greeting.
Phone numbers To check that the phone's SIM card matches your account's number.
What it is for

Why is the Android app not on Google Play yet?

The Google Play release is in preparation. In the meantime, the APK can be downloaded directly from callreply.fr. Android will ask you, once, to allow installs from that source.

Does the text really come from my number?

Yes. On Android, the message is sent by your phone, from your SIM, as an ordinary SMS. There is no third-party gateway and no new number, and the customer can reply to you directly.

What if my phone is switched off?

Calls missed while the phone was off are caught up on restart thanks to a saved resume point. The matching texts then go out, within your guardrails.

On iPhone, does the text go out on its own?

No. iOS does not allow an app to send an SMS by itself. CallReply prepares the message in Messages after checking your rules, and you tap Send.

Can I use CallReply on several phones?

Each phone shows up in the Devices section of the client area, and the dashboard can be filtered by device to follow each one's activity.
